Donald Trump has issued his first legislative veto since taking office, overruling Congress to protect his declaration of a national emergency to secure funds for a wall on the USA border with Mexico. Mr. Trump wasted no time countering, tweeting soon after, "VETO!"
"Today I am vetoing this resolution", Trump said, flanked by law enforcement officials at an Oval Office event.
Alexander added that he shares the president's goal of border security, but warned allowing Trump to redirect money without authorization could set a risky precedent.
It is unlikely that Congress will have the two-thirds majority required to override Trump's veto, though House Democrats have suggested they would try nonetheless.
The renegade conservatives had condemned the emergency declaration for setting up a unsafe precedent for a president while emphasising that they still agreed with Mr Trump's tough border security policies. "I thank all of the Strong Republicans who voted to support Border Security and our desperately needed WALL!"
Lawmakers, including 12 Republicans, had passed the rejection resolution on Thursday in a surprising rebuke of Mr Trump's signature issue.
Mr Trump had declared the emergency in February after Congress refused his requests for $5.7bn (£4.4bn) to construct a border wall - a campaign promise.
As the USA and the European Union struggle to iron out their differences on trade, Trump said, "they are willing to talk to us and if they don't talk to us, we're going to do something that's going to be pretty severe economically". The emergency declaration allows the president to redirect funds from other accounts such as military construction to the Southern border wall.
Trump's veto sends the resolution back to the US House of Representatives, which is expected to pick it up after the week-long congressional recess.
"We tried to cut a deal", Lee said.
Before issuing the veto, Trump again said there was a tremendous national emergency, while U.S. Attorney General William Barr said the action the president had taken was legal.
