Iran's Ambassador in London Hamid Baeidinejad said on Thursday that the U.S. army will not dare to execute White House's orders against the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC).
"Americans should know that this is a self-inflicted blow, meaning that they are jeopardizing the security of their own troops in CENTCOM and across the world", General Kioumars Heydari, head of the regular army's ground forces, was quoted as saying on Friday by the semi-official ISNA news agency.
Ayatollah Kermani also highlighted the IRGC's role in countering terrorist groups in the region, describing the United States blacklisting as "comical".
The 125,000-strong Revolutionary Guards also command the volunteer paramilitary Basij and control Iran's ballistic missile programme. The Guards' overseas Quds forces have fought Iran's proxy wars in the region.
To support the IRGC, 255 out of 290 Iranian lawmakers issued a statement on April 8, stressing that the Majlis will respond reciprocally to any measure against IRGC as part of the Iranian military forces.
Trump has taken a hard line toward Iran by withdrawing from a landmark nuclear deal that world powers signed with Iran in 2015 and by reimposing tough economic sanctions.
The US government this week designated the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group to increase pressure on Iran, isolate it further and prompt authorities to divert some of the financial resources Tehran uses to fund militant activity in the Middle East and beyond.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday accused Iran of ties to Al-Qaeda and declined to say whether the Trump administration had legal authority to invade the country.
