It will be the Falcon Heavy's very first customer launch, sending a communications satellite for Saudi Arabia to a high orbit above Earth.
He estimates that each fairing costs approximately $6 million, which equates to about 10 percent of the cost of a Falcon 9 launch.
As shown in the video below, the rocket's two side boosters landed successfully at SpaceX's Landing Zones 1 and 2 at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Landing a rocket booster back on the ground so it can be refurbished is one thing, but recovering other parts of the spacecraft, such as the nosecone fairing, helps to boost SpaceX's bottom line even more.
The launch on 26 April results in an arrival at the space station for a robotic capture by Expedition 59 crew members David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency and Nick Hague of NASA on Sunday, 28 April at 7 am EDT for a month-long stay.
Thursday's launch, which had to be postponed from the day before due to weather conditions, is the second since the initial trip in February 2018, when Falcon Heavy made a test flight with as dummy payload a Tesla electric roadster sent into deep space with a mannequin dressed in a space suit, which they called "Starman", in the driver's seat.
"Three for three boosters today", a SpaceX webcast commentator said.
The lift-off was crucial in the race with Boeing-Lockheed venture United Launch Alliance and Mr Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin as SpaceX aims to clinch a third of all US National Security Space missions - coveted military contracts worth billions.
In the test mission, Heavy's core booster missed the vessel and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.
SpaceX launched its massive Falcon Heavy rocket Thursday night carrying a communications satellite and, for the first time, landed all three boosters safely on land and at sea a few minutes after liftoff.
The US Air Force tapped SpaceX past year to launch a classified military satellite for US$130 million (S$176 million), and in February added three missions in a US$297 million contract.
It consists of the equivalent of three Falcon 9 rockets combined, tripling its thrust.
