"When I arrived for preseason [at Chelsea], the vibe was good", De Bruyne says in The Player's Tribune. I had never met him, and from what I'd read about him in the English press, I thought he was going to be a very different character.
"Then I got to City and I actually met Raheem, and we'd talk a bit after training, and I thought, 'Wait, this guy seems really cool?"
De Bruyne said: "Mourinho texted me, "You are staying. I'd rather you sell me". So I went to Werder Bremen in 2012, and that season went great. The plan was always for me to go on loan for a bit. He had some papers in front of him, and he said, "One assist". Zero goals. Ten recoveries.' It took me a minute to understand what he was doing.
"Then he started reading the stats of the other attacking forwards - Willian, Oscar, Mata, Schurrle".
The pair have a combined 230 goals and assists between them in 354 City appearances. I've only played three. So it's going to be different, no?'
"It was so unusual. We know that, and the players have shown they want to do it, and I didn't have any doubts about that".

And after holding talks with Mourinho in his office, De Bruyne opted to quit to Chelsea, to enable him play more regularly in another club.
De Bruyne said he attempted to defend himself, but the encounter soured him on the club.
As a 14-year-old, he joined Genk's academy, moving away from his family across Belgium.
De Bruyne recalled a odd meeting with Mourinho in his office. They said I was 'the Chelsea reject'.
"We always knew coming here in the past that it's a hard place to come".
