Foxconn assembles most of its products in mainland China but many of its gadgets are sold in the United States, leaving it vulnerable to market fallout from the ongoing US-China trade war.
Gou didn't confirm which iPhone models will be produced in India, however the South China Morning Post suggests Apple could use the Indian manufacturing plant to supply the USA and other major markets in the future.
"I'm already 69 years old".
Based on a report by Bloomberg, Foxconn is ready for a trial production of the latest iPhones.
"India is still an emerging smartphone market, it has a lot of potential domestically and could serve as an export hub for the region".
"However, one possibility is that Apple wants to diversify production of models destined for the U.S. market".
A change in leadership would come at a delicate time for the world's largest contract manufacturer, which is trying to reinvent itself to cut its reliance on Apple as smartphone sales plateau and as the iPhone maker diversifies its supplier base.
Gou announced he plans to take a step back from day-to-day management of the company, and focus more on Foxconn's long-term strategy.
Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer that now builds Apple iPhones, Amazon Kindles and Echo Dots at their factories in China will manufacture LCD screens at the Wisconsin facility.
Foxconn now has two assembly sites in India, one located just south of Chennai and the other on the outskirts of Coimbatore, where it makes devices for Xiaomi and Nokia.
The Taiwanese contract manufacturer assembles goods for Apple, SoftBank Group, and other global tech firms. "In the board meeting in between April-May we will give the new list of board members to the board", Gou said. He has a dozen software people in India and he plans to increase that to 600, he said. "If our customer wants to boost its scale, it will need to depend on us to grow the comprehensive supply chain".
Indians bought more than 140 million smartphones a year ago, with just 1.7 million sold by Apple, as consumers favored cheaper models from China.
